Licorice and Health - Uncle Johns Licorice Australia

Licorice has long been associated with a wide range of medicinal uses and health benefits.

Roman soldiers used it as a thirst quencher. Manuscripts dating from 360AD of Buddhist origin talk of licorice helping eye ailments, skin diseases, coughs and loss of hair. In the Middle Ages it became very popular as a sweet medicine and a general pick-me-up. Over time, it has also been used as a beautifying agent, an aphrodisiac and an elixir of life.

A Google search tells us it has been used:
  • as a demulcent (soothing, coating agent) in the digestive and urinary tracts, to help with coughs, to soothe sore throats and as a flavouring
  • to treat conditions ranging from diabetes to tuberculosis
  • through its active compounds in the licorice root to help prevent and treat chronic hepatitis (liver inflammation)
  • through the glycyrrhizin in licorice to combat viruses such as hepatitis B, influenza and HIV by boosting the
  • immune systems T-cell count and stimulating production of protective compounds such as interferon
  • through its glycycrhetinic acid content to help heal stomach ulcers
  • as a great source for female hormone estrogen
  • as an effective cough suppressant
  • to increase bile flow and
  • to lower blood cholesterol levels.

Not being health professionals we obviously cant verify or endorse any of that but we can say that licorice, like most foods, should be eaten in sensible serving amounts. Like anything else in life, excessive consumption can lead to adverse outcomes.
